Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre

March 2011

Regional Tourism Award for Steamtown

Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre won the 2010 Advantage SA Regional Award in Tourism. This award reflects the outstanding achievements in 2010 with the introduction of South Australia’s first and only Sound & Light Show, which operated every evening since May 2010, injecting valuable Tourism Dollars into the local Community through extra overnight stays. The numbers of day-visitors going through the heritage listed Railway Depot also increased dramatically (120%) since continuously guided tours were introduced, which allows the visitors to join the guided tours at any time avoiding any waiting time. Flood Lights installed for Sound & Light Show

Thanks to Jason Schell and BHP Billiton the walk every evening in the dark between the Diesel Shed and the 3 Gauge turntable where the historic rail carriage is placed from where visitors experience the Sound & Light Show is now much easier, due to the donation of solar equipped flood lights which illuminate the entire path making the passage much easier for everyone; Gone are the days of using torches. Peterborough High School restoration project

A handful of Peterborough High School students have undertaken the restoration job of an 18XX sheep carriage van. The historic carriage is in need of total restoration, i.e. new roof, painting etc. Under the leadership of volunteer Hal McFarlane, the students learned to bend wood under steam, installing new beams and now are now in the process of placing the wood panels on the roof.
